Inpatient Ward Visitors Group, Top Service Receiver Priorities May 2011 Update..
05/11
Current issues highlighted by service receivers on the Hartington Unit, Chesterfield Royal Hospital:
· Patients felt that they did not like to have to ask a member of staff for their mobile phone as this meant they would need to fill in a form before they get their mobile to use.
· Mobile use is not permitted on the wards. However, mobiles can be used in the Hub Café areas.
Patient felt that they were lied to by their doctor to get them to come onto the unit, patient would have preferred to be told the truth.
This is a serious allegation. In order to address this we would need specific examples. We also have PALs available to patients.
· Tansley ward not segregated but mix sex, patients would have liked it to be same sex only.
Tansley ward has segregated areas. For example, we have separate bathing areas and separate lounges.
· Kitchen accessible all the time on Morton ward but not on Tansley ward.
There is access available to patients at all times unless a clinical risk has been identified which may result in use of the kitchen being monitored by staff. Drinks are available at all time.
· Patient on Tansley ward not allowed to pray outside at 6 in the morning and not given any options as to when and where they could pray.
The Hartington unit has a Sacred space available to patients. This is situated next to the hub.
· Doctors round during lunch means that patients would not get any lunch so would have to go hungry.
We have “protected meal times” on all wards to ensure patients nutritional requirements are met at all times.
|
· Patients said that they had been asleep when dinner was served so when they woke they could not get their dinner. Please submit specific examples to enable us to follow this up. |
All patients are called for meals when meals arrive on the wards. There are usually a selection of sandwiches available should patients miss meal times. We are not allowed to re heat meals on the wards.
· Some patients felt that the food portions available had been very small for some patients, which meant that they would not be allowed to have more should they wish.
Patients are able to request larger size portions if required on their menu cards. There is usually food available for second helpings. We also have a food complement and complaints book which patient’s can use. Patient’s are also encouraged to discuss such issues with ward staff.
- Elderly service receiver not getting support from staff in getting from the ward areas to the Hub Cafe
· Patients not able to talk to named nurse, as they are always busy.
Awaiting responses from DMHST
Current issues highlighted by service receivers on the Radbourne Unit, Derby Royal Hospital:
Ø BME patients felt that they did not have culturally sensitive foods available for them and they would have to order from a takeaway in order to get foods that they would normally eat.
· Patients wanted interpreters for those service users whose first language is not English and found it difficult to understand what was being said to them.
· Service receivers felt that Derbyshire Mind failed to get in touch after leaving a message for them.
· No physical exercise for patients since building work has started and no options given to do any exercise.
· Patients said they did not receive support from their CPN, which resulted in the stay at the unit.
· Building works causing disruption to meal times especially breakfast as no sausages or porridge are available just ready brek.
· Service users felt that there was no recycling going on at the unit and things are just put in bins when they can be recycled.
· Drain outside Jackie’s Pantry is loose and people can trip up over it which is a health and safety issue.
· Patient felt that staff would just walk in on them without knocking or letting patients know when they carry out checks.
